Any sort of chemical injury to the eyes, either with acids or alkalis or similar agents used in industries or farming also directly destroys the ocular surface .

The recovery of such ocular surface injury depends on the extent of damage to the limbal stem cells and the blood supply.

Based on the primary disease there are medical treatments and surgical treatments like Buccal Mucous Membrane Graft, Amniotic Membrane Grafts, Simple Limbal Epithelial Transplant ( SLET ) which can be combined with minor procedures like a Tarsorapphy . With these approached nowadays we are able to salvage the eye and vision in many patients.
